In 1985, at the age of 17, I spent a summer at Michigan State Univeristy’s Clarion Workshop in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing. Early in the workshop, a grimy stuffed blue rabbit turned up in the dormitory lounge where we students hung out. Apparently this was not their first appearance, because when instructor Algis Budrys laid eyes on them he screamed “I hate that rabbit!” and started jumping up and down on them, biting them, trying to rip them to pieces—a sight that is forever burned into my memory. Later, the rabbit showed up in the freight elevator, posed in a tableau with balloons bound to their body and their ears pinned together behind their head. They thus acquired the nickname “Bondage Bunny.” Later still, with my Canon AE-1 in hand, I stealthily followed the rabbit into the dormitory basement as they embarked on a mysterious and impenetrable mission.
