I received a curious item in the mail this evening. It is a German paperback, circa 1995, entitled Ein neuer Mensch: Die besten Stories aus The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction #91. The back cover says this:
Auswahlbände mit herausragenden Erzählungen aus diesem traditionsreichen und mehrfach mit Preisen ausgezeichneten Magazin erscheinen seit drei Jahrzehnten in der Reihe »Heyne Science Fiction & Fantasy«.¹
The table of contents lists a story called »Von uns aus gesehen standen wir links« by one William D. Shunn. Here is the first page:
Eigentlich hatte keiner schuld daran, aber die Versuchung jemandem die Sache in die Schuhe zu schieben, ist noch heute sehr groß. Uns allen die Schuld zu geben, ist besonders leicht, auch wenn es schmertz. Obwohl wir damals noch Kinder waren, haben wir nicht nur die Laufbahn eines Menschen kaputtgemacht, sondern auch seine Existenz. Und im gleichen Augenblick wurde das Antlitz einer ganzen Nation verändert. Wenn man als Kind an einer solchen Sache beteiligt war, hinterläßt es in einem einen starken Eindruck.
Immer wenn ich davon höre, daß wieder jemand heimlich auf der Schwarzen Liste gelandet, verschwunden ist oder im Gefängnis sitzt, spüre ich, daß sich die altvertraute Last wieder auf meine Schultern legt. Daß ich mich daran gewöhnt habe, trägt nicht dazu bei, ihr Gewicht zu mindern. Es ist vielleicht ein irrationaler Gedanke, aber in solchen Augenblicken werde ich das Gefühl nicht los, der ganze darauf folgende Wahnsinn wäre uns vielleicht erspart geblieben, wenn es nie zu dem ersten Vorkommnis mit Mr. Kemmelman gekommen wäre.
Ich glaube die anderen empfinden ähnlich. Wir sprechen zwar nur selten darüber, aber ich sehe es ihnen an den Augen an.
Wir sind ausnahmslos Verfolgte—und zwar aufgrund eines Mißverständnisses.²

Seriously, though, it's very strange to look at one's own words translated into another language by another hand. Very dislocative. And very strange to think that German renditions of my words have been out there in the world, with me completely unaware, for seven years. It's as if I had a child, and the child had a twin, and the twin was stolen by gypsies and raised in Munich.
What do we have to say to each other? How could I not have known of his Existenz?
